Tabby Li is a Chinese-Irish multidisciplinary artist and co-founder of the London-based curatorial platform Lee Scully. She has a background in Film, Television, Fashion, Opera and Theatre as a Hair, Make-up and Prosthetics Artist and Designer (receiving The Film Olympiad Award 2024, and The British Short Film Award 2023 for Best Hair & Make-up Design).
Li's practice explores the anomalous qualities of phenomena that are expendable, fleeting, and residual—concerned with creating new ways of attuning artefacts, forming unexpected ecologies out of everyday logics and familiar functions. Often working with objects that echo the body, both in form and in use, she allows the trace of human intent to shape their structure whilst seeking to move beyond simple referentiality, constructing an idiom that relates to the body without reducing it to a closed system of functions.
Li places value on the encounter—both in the process of making and in the unfolding of the outcome—allowing the temporality of forms to hold onto a momentary logic. This approach embraces play and experimentation, where careful consideration and chance coexist within an open field of investigation. The assemblage of forms—bodily in texture, presence, and association—creates a conscious connection to the ways technology integrates into our lives: as tools we shape and as systems that in turn shape us. In this way, she aims to evoke a layered historical relationship with technology, while allowing connections to emerge organically between diverse artifacts, seeking expansion and potential over classification or fixed categories of reality.
